Horizon Aviation, Inc. of Warwick, RI is pleased to announce an innovative solution for students who want to become professional pilots: the Global Aviation Degree Program (GADP).
The GADP is the distance learning program for Utah Valley State College. It is an accredited college degree program that allows you to:
- Complete all flight training required to become a professional pilot
- Receive college credit for flying at Horizon Aviation
- Take additional required General Education courses online
- Complete an Associate or Bachelor Degree in Aviation Science online
- Apply for academic student loans through the US Government as well as alternative student loans with private banks

Additionally, you can stay in Rhode Island, keep working at your job, stay near friends and family, and save tens of thousands of dollars on the total program cost.
There is many questions you will need answered before choosing any school or career path. The best way to do that is to call and schedule a visit or just drop by. In the meantime, here are a couple of the most common questions.
Is this program for me?
Many people would love to fly for a living but don't think they can. They might not have the flight experience or a college degree. Many don't think they can afford it. Horizon Aviation is very pleased that the GADP addresses the three most common problems: flight training, college degree, and financing.
This program is for anyone who dreams of being a professional pilot. If you are about to graduate from high school, you are a candidate. If you are already working in another profession, it's probably not too late. Most of our career students are 22 to 32 years old and are already working in other industries. If you have already taken some general education courses at a college, you may well be able to transfer those credits to UVSC so that valuable experience won't go to waste.
How does the Global Aviation Degree Program work?
There are three core elements to the Associate Degree in the Global Aviation Degree Program.
First, you will take flight training with Horizon Aviation at T.F. Green Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island. This includes all licenses from the Private Pilot Certificate through the Commercial Multi-Engine Instructor License. This is all the flight training required to be competitive when applying for airline flight crew positions.
Simultaneously, you will take additional aviation related courses (such as Aviation Law and Flight Physiology) online with Utah Valley State College.
Finally, you will take General Education courses (Math, History, English, etc) in your final two semesters either online with UVSC or at a local college such as URI, CCRI, or RIC and then transfers the credits to UVSC.
All of the above takes place over four semesters totaling 16 months. When complete, the student will have earned an Associate in Applied Science Degree from Utah Valley State College.
What steps are involved?
- First, schedule a career counseling appointment with the program
manager at Horizon Aviation
- Decide if the program is right for you
- Apply for student loans
- Once approved register for classes
- Start taking flight training with Horizon Aviation
- Simultaneously, start the academic classes online with UVSC
- Complete all flight training at Horizon Aviation and finish
your online classes to receive an Associate Degree in Aviation
Science.
- Next, you are eligible to begin working as a professional pilot
(starting as a paid flight instructor). This allows you to build
flight experience, earn a living, and complete the general education
requirements online with UVSC to earn the Bachelor Degree in Aviation
Science. This can be done while teaching at virtually any flight
school in the U.S
What will I have when I'm done? Upon successful completion of the 16-month program, you will have earned seven FAA licenses including the: Private Pilot License, Instrument Pilot Rating, Commercial Pilot License, Multi-Engine Rating, Certified Flight Instructor, Instrument Instructor, and the Multi-Engine Flight Instructor.
Additionally, you will have earned an Associate Degree in Aviation Science from Utah Valley State College.
What will I do when I'm done?
While there are many options available to those who successfully complete the Global Aviation Degree Program, the most common career path is as follows with estimated times for each phase.
Flight training with Horizon Aviation in Warwick and Associate Degree online with UVSC
You will stay in Rhode Island during this phase while you earn the Associate Degree. This process should take approximately 16 months.
Next you will look for a job as Certified Flight Instructor, building flight time and experience. You may find a job locally or anywhere in the country. You are no longer tied to Horizon Aviation or Rhode Island. You may continue to take academic courses online, earning additional credits to complete the Bachelor Degree in Aviation Science. Typically individuals work as flight instructors for 12-24 months as they build flight experience to be competitive when applying for airline jobs.
Finally, you will try to secure a position as a First Officer (co-pilot) with a regional airline. Successful candidates typically have at least 1,500 hours total flight time including at least 100 hours of multi-engine time.
